Bartramia pomiformis Common Apple-moss

An autoicous (or synoicous), cushion-forming, acrocarpus moss, usually found growing on sandsone, or other mildly acidic to slightly base-rich rocks, in ravines, on cliffs and in rocky woodland. It is most common in the west and north of Britain. It is quite distinctive when it is bearing its spherical capsules, which are usually abundant in spring and summer. There are surprisingly few records of this attractive moss in West Glamorgan, where it is confined to the uplands of the South Wales Coalfield, mostly in Neath Port Talbot.
