Russula heterophylla Greasy Green Brittlegill

A small to medium sized brittlegill (caps 5-10cm in diameter) with a greenish coloured cap which has radial streaks or veins and wrinkles and a faintly grooved edge. The application of ferrous salts on the stem gives a fairly strong salmon pink reaction, which will distinguish it from Russula cyanoxantha. The greasy, crowded gills are white, brittle and sometimes forked and the spore print is white (see photo). The spores are small for a Russula species, approximatel (see photo). It is occasional in deciduous woods and in wooded parkland but there are few confirmed records in West Glamorgan. It is sometimes confused with Russula cyanoxantha and Russula aeruginea. The spore print of Russula aeruginea is distinctly cream in colour.
