Russula sanguinaria Bloody Brittlegill

A common species which occurs with pines, particularly in parks and on industrial and retail estates. Although quite distinctive, cap colour is variable, ranging from scarlet to pinkish red and often pale or even whitish. The stipe is usually flushed with pink and gradually develops yellow stains with age (see photo). The flesh has a very acrid taste. Probably widespread wherever pines have been planted in parks and on estates in West Glamorgan, but overlooked or confused with other red species.
