Common Sedge is a plant of acidic habitats but with a wide ecological tolerance, occuring in Sphagnum mires, damp heathland and coastal communities such as dune slacks. It sometimes forms relatively tall tussocks in swampy places, particularly where there is some shade. When in fruit, the black glumes which contrast sharply with the green utricles give it a distinctive appearance. It is widespread and common in suitable habitats throughout West Glamorgan.
