Cirsium eriophorum Woolly Thistle

Ysgall Gwlanog

(Linnaeus) Scop.

An unmistakabe tall and striking thistle with large, woolly, globular, purple flower heads. It is a calcicole of limestone grassland which is locally common in parts of coastal Mid Glamorgan, but its occurrence in West Glamorgan is questionable. At least some records from Gower are errors and records from sites away from limestone (e.g. from Neath Port Talbot) are almost certainly errors.
