Linnaeusf.
A bushy evergreen shrub, native to Japan, with thick, oval, shiny leaves. It is a popular garden shrub and is widely planted in amenity areas and along roads and hedges in industrial parks. It is very floriferous with greenish flowers that give rise to pink fruits. It is sometimes found naturalised as a garden throw-out and will seed itself occasionally and become established although seedlings are rarely recorded. It has been known in the wild in Britain since 1897. It occurs frequently in lowland areas of West Glamorgan but most plants recorded have been planted and its status as a naturalised species is uncertain.
