Fragaria ananassa Garden Strawberry

A perennial hybrid between Fragaria chiloensis and Fragaria virginiana, which are both American species. It is the well known cultivated strawberry which has been grown in Britain for over 200 years and frequently occurs in the wild as a garden throw-out or originating from bird-dispersed seed. It is larger than Wild Strawberry (Fragaria vesca) in its foliage and flowers and it proces vigorous, creeping stolons. It is a widespread neophyte in Britain, particularly in the south, and there are scattered records of it throughout West Glamorgan.
