Geranium pratense Meadow Crane's-bill

A  bushy crane's-bill, up to 60cm or so tall, with long-stalked deeply dissected leaves and large, blue flowers in summer. It is a species of rough grassland, roadside verges and hay meadows, preferring base-rich soils. It is often grown in gardens and frequently escapes into grassy waste places and it is frequently sown into wild flower mixtures. It is widespread throughout Britain but absent from some parts of mid Wales and the highlands of Scotland and it is rather scarce in Ireland. It seems to have expanded its range northwards in Britain in recent decades but this may be due to deliberate introductions. It is largely a lowland species in West Glamorgan but it is difficult to differentiate between truly native populations and those which have been derived from imported seed or garden stock.
