Common Bird's-foot-trefoil is a key species in a number of habitats, as it supports a large diversity and biomass of invertebrates including familiar species such as Common Blue Polyommatus icarus and Dingy Skipper Erynnis tages. In addition to being an important host plant for larval stages of these and numerous other species, its extended repeat flowering makes it valuable for pollinators throughout much of the growing season. A less well known invertebrate associate is Contarinia loti, a gall midge (Cecidomyiidae) recorded at Margam in 2025, which causes the flowers to turn red, deform and become inflated.

Native
