Trifolium hybridum Alsike Clover

A perennial clover which is similar to White Clover (Trifolium repens) but has upright, usually hollow stems that do not creep and root along the ground and leaves that do not have white chevron markings. The whitish flower heads often develop a pale pink hue as they age. The form which is sometimes called Dutch Clover (Trifolium hybridum subsp. hybridum) was often grown as a forage crop in the past and all plants in West Glamorgan are probably referable to this subspecies It occurs occasionally in waste places and in disturbed places in roadside verges where it may be introduced, unintentionally, as seed. Populations rarely persist for long. There are widespread, scattered records in West Glamorgan but it seems to be less common now than it was in previous decades.
