Lactarius serifluus Watery Milkcap

Cap Llaeth Dyfrllyd

(DC.) Fr.

An uncommon, variable milkcap with a dark brown or rusty-brown cap which develops a distinctive pleated or folded margin as it ages and ochre (sometimes somewhat pinkish) gills that exude a mild-tasting watery miilk. It is found with deciduous trees, particularly oak. It appears to be rare in West Glamorgan with two collections, one from Llanrhidian (Gower) and the othere from Gnoll Estate Country Park (Neath Port Talbot), both associated with oak. There are few records of it elsewhere in Wales.

All the  specimens collected in the county so far resemble the form that is described by Jacob Heilmann-Clausen, Annameike Verbeken and Jan Vesterholt in the monograph  The Genus Lactarius (Fungi of Northern Europe Vo. 2, 2000) which is named Lactarius subumbonatus  Lindgr. The name Lactarius cimicarius Landell & Nannfeldt has also been misapplied to this species.
