Melanoleuca cognata Spring Cavalier

Spring Cavalier has a brown or ochre cooured cap, darker when moist and usually with a darker centre. The cap can be up to 10cm in diameter, but it is often often smaller. When mature the gills are salmon-buff, sometimes with an orange tinge but it is quite variable in its field characters, like other cavalier species. One-celled (non-septate) cheilocystidia, often with apical encrustations, are often frequent along the edges of the gills. It may be a complex of species. There are few records of it West Glamorgan, mostly in coastal grasslands or open mosaic habitats such as Baglan Energy Park. Despite its common name it occurs in autumn and spring.
