Omphalina galericolor

An uncommon species associated with mosses such as Syntrichia ruraliformis and Ceratodon purpureus on sand dunes. The yellow-ochre or orange-brown cap is 0.5-2.5cm in diameter, distinctly umbillicate, with translucent striations and a crenulate margin. The colour distinguishes it from Ompahalina lilacinicolor which is found in similar places and may be just a variety of it. It can also be distinguished from other similar Omphalina species by its stem which is pale or similar in colour to the cap but shorter in length than the diameter of the cap. Spores are subspherical to broadly ellipsoid in shape and measure 6.5-8.5 x 5-7 microns. It is a rare species in West Glamorgan with records only from Baglan and Morfa Dunes, where it is a significant member of the dune assemblage fungal community.

Funga Nodica (Eds. Knudsen & Vesterholt, 2012) does not separate Omphalina galericolor and Omphalina lilacinicolor but treats the species described here as Omphalina galericolor var. galericolor.
