Sparassis crispa Wood Cauliflower

A large, cream-coloured fruiting body about the size of a football. The densly-packed, frilly branches give a cauliflower like appearance, hence the common name. It grows at the base of conifer trees, particularly pine, but also spruce and Douglas Fir. It is a weak root parasite which will also grow saprophytically on decaying wood. Rather uncommon in West Glamorgan with occasional records from Glyncastle Forest and other conifer forests in the Afan and Pelenna valleys.
