Cladonia peziziformis Turban Lichen

A rare, Atlantic lichen which grows on sandy or peaty ground on heathland, almost always near the coast. It is quite distinctive when it produces its one or two (sometimes three) brown, turban-like apothecia that are formed on short branches at the top of squamulose podetia, which may be up to 1cm tall. It is known from less than 10 sites in Wales, which include Anglesea, Caernarfon, Pembrokeshire and Glamorgan (Gower). It was found by Steve Chambers on Rhossili Down in 2006 and rediscovered in 2021 by BS in the same location (several patches). It seems to favour burnt peaty ground and fire disturbance may be a prerequisite for its long term survival at a site.
