Platismatia glauca Frilly Lettuce

A fairly large, greenish-grey foliose lichen with a thin, almost papery thallus which has frilly lobes.  It is usually found as an epiphyte on trees or wooden posts but will also grow on rock or even on the ground. It prefers acidic, nutrient poor conditions and has decreased in some areas where there is significant nitrogen pollution. It is widespread in West Glamorgan and particularly in the uplands where it often occurs on larch.
