An evergreen shrub or small tree, up to 8m high, native to China. The branches are erect and arching and the dull-green, broadly-elliptical leaves are 5-8cm long, thick with deeply impressed veins on the upper surface and yellowish-woolly below. A mature planted specimen grows in Loughor and self-seeded plants show a scattered, mostly coastal distribution in West Glamorgan and is often found on open mosaic sites, such as Baglan Energy Park where it is common. It is tetraploid (2n=68) and apomictic.
