Cotoneaster rehderi Bullate Cotoneaster

A large, deciduous, arching shrub, native to China, which produces lots of ripe fruit in autumn that attracts lots of fugiverous birds, particularly thrushes. With its wrinkled leaves it is very similar to Hollyberry Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster bullatus) and regarded by some as simply a variety of that species. It differs mainly in its larger, strongly wrinkled leaves (up to 15cm long) which have 8-11pairs of veins. It is more common than Hollyberry Cotoneaster in West Glamorgan and has become more widespread in recent years, particularly along tracks in wooded areas. It is a tetraploid (2n=68), apomictic species.
