Cotoneaster x watereri Waterer's Cotoneaster

A tall, arching, semi-evergreen shrub which is the hybrid between two diploid, outbreeding cotoneasters, Tree Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster frigidus) and Willow-leaved Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster salicifolius); both 2n=34. It originated in the English nursery of John Waterer Sons & Crisp in the 1920s and there are several cultivars of which some are difficult to separate from Henry's Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster henryanus). However, many forms are very large and it is probably the most commonly naturalised, tree-like cotoneaster in Britain. The leaves are usually much more strongly impressed than those of Tree Cotoneaster whose leaves also have a rather matt-like surface. There are several records from West Glamorgam where it may be under recorded and confused with other species.
