Dactylorhiza incarnata subsp. coccinea Early Marsh-orchid

This subspecies of Early Marsh-orchid is usually quite short (<20cm) and has rich, ruby-red or crimson-red flowers. It is probably the most common subspecies of Early Marsh-orchid in West Glamorgan but its stauts in the British Flora has been designated as nationally scarce. It is a species of dune slacks or similar marshy, base-rich habitats in coastal areas. It is an endemic taxon that some regard as a separate species in its own right (e.g. see Orchids of Europe, Norrth Africa and the Middle East, Pierre Delforge, 2005).
