Equisetum fluviatile Water Horsetail

A very common aquatic horsetail which grows in lots of wet habitats such as canals, ponds, the edges of lakes and other slow-flowing waters. It also grows in semi-aquatic, marshy habitats such as marshes, fens and wet ditches. The wide central hollow in the stem, which occupies at least 80% of the width, is a distinctive feature, as is the unbranched or sparsely branched stem. It hybridises with the equally common Field Horsetain (Equisetum arvense) to form a hybrid (Equisetum x littorale) which may occur in the absence of both parents. Water Horsetail is common and found throughout West Glamorgan is suitable habitats.
