Equisetum sylvaticum Wood Horsetail

An attractive horsetail that grows on damp or wet acidic soils in marshy grasslands, roadside verges and often in lightly shaded places in or at the edges of woodland where it may form quite large colonies. The slender, dense whorls of drooping branches, which are themselves further branched (a feature not shared with other British horsetails) give it a graceful appearance. It belongs to the Boreo-temperate element of the European flora and is largely a northern and western species in Britain. It has a scattered distribution in West Glamorgan but is most common in the uplands of South Wales Coalfield.
