Eriophorum latifolium Broad-leaved Cottongrass

A rather elegant cottongrass with loosely tufted shoots and wider leaves (3-8mm) than Common Cottongrass (Eriophorum angustifolium). It is a rhizomatous perennial of base-rich marshes and flushes. In the UK it is largely a plant of base-rich wetlands in the uplands of northern Britain, the west of Ireland and parts of mid and south Wales. It has been lost from many of its former sites in southern England where it is now rather rare. It is rare in West Glamorgan with just two extant populations in base-flushed, marshy grassland.
