Euphorbia portlandica Portland Spurge

This compact, short-lived perennial (or biennial) spurge grows in maritime habitats such as on sea cliffs and sand dunes. It is an Oceanic Southern-temperate species which has a strictly coastal and largely western distribution in Britain and Ireland. It is widespread along the coast of South Wales but is on the rare plant register of some Welsh vice counties. It is frequent on the south Gower cliffs but it is much less common in Swansea Bay where it is rare or occasional on sand dunes. The small, hairless, fleshy leaves are smaller than those of Sea Spurge (Euphorbia paralias) and have a prominent midrib below.
