Euphrasia tetraquetra Western Eyebright

Effros y Gorllewin

(Bréb.) Arrond.

A fairly distinctive eyebright with a distinctly coastal distribution in Britain and Ireland, found on exposed sea cliffs, sand dunes and in calcareous grassland.  It is largely a western species in Britain, absent from much of the east coast of England. It often has a rather low, squat appearance with very short internodes. The epithet teraquetra, which means four-cornered, refers to its rather four-angled growth form. It is found along the coast in West Glamorgan and is the most common early-flowering eyebright on the south Gower cliffs. It is also frequent in coastal open mosaic habitats.
