Galium odoratum Woodruff

An attractive, white-flowered perennial with rhizomatous growth which can form quite large, showy patches in deciduous woodland and on hedgebanks, particularly on base-rich or neutral soils. It is also cultivated in gardens, commonly planted and escapes frequently. It has a widespread distribution in Britain but is often only locally uncommon. In West Glamorgan it is most fequently encountered in the limestone woodlands of south Gower. It is much less common in the South Wales Coalfield but there are scattered populations on the more neutral or mineral-rich soils of hedgebanks and the riparian woodlands of the Neath Valley, where it is a good indicator of old or ancient hedges and woodlands.
