Genista tinctoria Dyer's Greenweed

A small, deciduous, leguminous shrub without thorns, somewhat like a diminuitive Broom (Cytisus scoparius), with upright branches which produce bright yellow flowers in early summer. It is a species of unimproved grasslands, often where there there is at least some base-richness and it is a good indicator of old pastures and meadows. It also grows in grassy verges or banks and occasionally in woodland rides. It is widespread in England and Wales but like Petty Whin (Genista anglica), with which it sometimes grows, it has declined greatly  in recent decades as result of agricultural imprivements, eutrophication, poor management and neglect. It is scarce in West Glamorgan wihere all it known populations are in unimproved grasslands in the uplands of Neath Port Talbot. Some significant populations occur in the Dulais Valley.
