Gentianella uliginosa Dune Gentian

Crwynllys Cymreig

(Willd.) Boerner

A small, endemic, annual gentian which is only found in dune slacks in south Wales and north Devon. The West Galmorgan populations are found on Oxwich Dunes and Whiteford Burrows where they occur in open dune slacks, particularly at the edges near paths and in marginal areas that are flooded in winter. Populations are small and vulnerable at both sites. The exact taxanomic status of Dune Gentian has been the subject of some debate which is summarised by Tim Rich and Andy McVeigh (Gentians of Britain and Ireland, BSBI Handbook No. 19, 2019) who cite genetic evidence that suggests that it is best regarded as a subspecies, i.e. Gentianella amarella subsp. occidentalis.
