Geranium sanguineum Bloody Crane's-bill

A very attractive, usually low-growing, rhizomatous, hairy, perennial with relatively small, round, deeply dissected leaves and striking, bright purple or crimson flowers. which are produced in early summer. It is a plant of base-rich grasslands, rocky habitats and scrub, mostly in coastal sites but also inland in habiats like limestone pavement. It is frequently grown in gardens and garden escapes are not uncommon, particularly in southern Britain. Native populations have a widespread  coastal distribution in Britain but many inland populations are probably of garden origin. It is a conspicuous feature of the south Gower cliff flora from Mumbles Head to Rhossili in summer, but records in West Glamorgan made outside of Gower are almost cetainly garden escapes.
