Glaucium flavum Yellow Horned-poppy

A short-lived, perennial poppy of coastal shingle and ciffs but also found amongst rocky rubble and on stony beaches. The pinnately-lobed, silvery-grey leaves and the yellow poppy flowers, which give rise to long,somewhat sickle-shaped seed pods, make it unmistakable. It has an almost exclusively coastal distribution in Britain and plants that are sometimes recorded inland do not persist. Populations sizes in any one location can vary greatly in size from year to year and their survival is ultimately dependent on good, sustained seed production. Plants exude a yellow latex and contain a diversity of interesting alkaloids of pharmacological interest, some of which are reported to have anticancer properties. It has a scattered distribution along the coast of West Glamorgan with a significant population in the rocky rubble of the revetment on the west side of Crymlyn Burrows.
