Lithospermum officinale Common Gromwell

A distictive perennial, somewhat like a very leafy forget-me-not, with coarsley hairy stems and leaves. The small, cream-coloured flowers are produced in June and July. It is fairly strict calcicole and is found most frequently on base-rich soils, including sand dunes. It has a local distribution in Wales and in West Glamorgan it is only found in coastal areas in limestone grassland and on sand dunes, e.g. Whiteford Burrows.
