Parentucellia viscosa Yellow Bartsia

An annual, Mediterranean-Atlantic hemiparasite which grows in sandy grasslands, dune slacks and open mosaic sites. It has a widespread, mostly coastal distribution in Britain and it appears to be expanding its range northwards in Britain perhaps as a result of seed introductions. Nevertheless it remains a scarce species in Britain and it is on the rare plant registers of many vice counties, including Glamorgan (VC41). It has a superficial resemblance to Hay Rattle (Rhinanthus minor), but it is covered in sticky, glandular hairs and the lower lip of its smaller, yellow flowers is distinctly 3 lobed. It is undoubdedly native in coastal areas of south Wales and it is locally common in dune slacks, damp, sandy grasslands  and coastal roadside verges in West Glamorgan. Occurrences are often rather unpredictable and population sizes vary greatly from year to year. Large populations are requently recorded in the vicinity of Crymlyn Burrows and Baglan Dunes.
