Ranunculus aquatilis Common Water-crowfoot

An annual or short-lived perennial water-crowfoot which prefers shallow water in ephemeral pools, ditches and flooded areas of marshes. It seems to prefer nutrient and base-rich water. It is similar to Pond Water-crowfoot (Ranunculus peltatus) and often confused with it but differs in its shorter fruit stalks and in the shape of nectaries at the base of the petals which are circular rather than pear-shaped. It is found throughout much of Britain and Ireland where it is most common in southern England. It is more local and almost entirely lowland in Wales and it is uncommon in West Glamorgan, rarely persisting for more than a few years in places where it has been found.
