Ranunculus parviflorus Small-flowered Buttercup

A small, pale-green, hairy, annual buttercup with a rather sprawling growth form which grows in dry, disturbed habitats with neutral or basic soils. Rosettes of basal leves, produced before flowering shoots appear, have small, rounded leaves which are lobed and deeply toothed. The flowers have tiny, inconspicuous, yellow petals and the fruits are very rough. It has a scattered distribution in southern Britain but it is rather local in most places and generally scarce in Wales growing mostly on calcareous soils in coastal areas. It is an uncommon species in West Glamorgan confined to Gower where it occurs in disturbed areas on the limestone cliffs, mostly west of Port Eynon.
