Melanelixia fuliginosa Shiny Brown-shield

Forms a chocolate-brown, lobed thallus, 2-4cm in diameter, on silica-rich rock, walls, monuments and headstones, sometimes occuring in clusters. The marginal lobes are shiny but the centre of the thallus is darker with masses of peg-like isidia. It rarely forms apothecia. It is similar to Melanelixia glabratula which grows on bark. It has a scattered distribution in West Glamorgan and is frequent on siliceous boulders in the upalnds.
