Atriplex prostrata Spear-leaved Orache

An erect or procumbent annual with triangular leaves that are usually distinctly toothed and which may or may not be mealy. It is a weedy plant of waste places and cultivated ground and occasionally grows in saline habitats near the sea. Unlike Long-stalked Orache (Atriplex longipes) and the hybrid between it and Long-stalked Orache (Atriplex x gustaffsoniana) it does not have stalked bracteoles. Note, however, that the bracteole stalks in the hybrid are very short (c. 1mm). It differs from Babintgon's Orache (Atriplex glabriuscula) it its two bracteoles being fused only at the base, so that in side view you can see a distinct gap between them (see photo). Spear-leaved Orache has a lowland and somewhat coastal distribution in West Glamorgan where it occurs in ruderal and cultivated  habitats and occasionally in coastal driftlines.
