A dioecious, evergreen shrub native to New Zealand which has been cultivated in Britain since the 19th Century and is often found growing in hedges as a wind-break in exposed coastal areas. It is salt-tolerant, so it can be grown in locations that receive significant sea-spray, such as on coastal cliffs. It has become naturalised in some of the milder parts of southwestern Britain and it is occasional in coastal parts of Wales, including West Glamorgan where it grows along the south Gower cliffs.
