A member of the Hieracium maculatum aggregate of species, all of which have blotched leaves. The aggregate has been split by Sell and Murrell into 5 segregates; Hieracium maculatum (sensu stricto) is not a British species. It is frequent in southern England and occasional in south Wales, particularly in coastal areas. It is found in disturbed areas such as open mosaic sites, waste ground, pavements and other urban habitats. It may be spreading in south Wales. It is a member of Section Vulgata.
