Hebeloma fragilipes

A medium-sized Hebeloma with a very pale, almost white coloured cap, which grows with birch. It has rather narrow, somewhat constricted cheilocystidia and spores which slowly stain violet after treatment with Melzer's iodine. It is a member of the Hebeloma crustulineforme complex and it is believed to be widespread in Northern Europe. There has been just one collection in West Glamorgan where its precise status is unknown.
