Hebeloma mesophaeum Veiled Poisonpie

Crwst Llenog

(Pers.) Quél.

A  small to medium-sized Hebeloma with a distinctive slimy, two-tone cap, 2 - 6 cm in diameter, which is dark reddish-brown in the centre and paler buff-brown towards the margin. Young specimens usually has a fairly prominent ring or collar on the stem, a remnant of the cobweb-like cortina which covers the gills of young fruiting bodies, but this may be less obvious in older speciemns. The spores are relatively small (7.5-11.5 microns) and do not stain violet in Melzer's iodine. It is a common species which grows with lots of different deciduous trees and also with conifers. It is widespread in West Glamorgan.
