Hebeloma pusillum

A small Hebeloma which grows with willows in wet woodland. The fruiting bodies often have a two-tone cap is reminiscent of Hebeloma mesophaeum but it is usually much smaller (0.5 - 2 cm in diameter), the spores are narrower and larger (10-15 microns) and they have a weak violet reaction with Melzer's iodine. The cheilocystidia are cylindrical cheilocystidia and slightly bulbous or capitate at their tips. It has a largely coastal ditribution in West Glamorgan where it grow in willow scrub and dunes slacks with Creeping Willow (Salix repens) but it also occurs near Grey Willow (Salix cinerea) in marshy grasslands in the u[plands of Neath Port Talbot.
