Hypogymnia tubulosa Powder-headed Tube Lichen

(Schaer.) Hav.

Very similar to Hypogymnia physodes but it has narrower, more ascending branches whose tips are closed and covered in sorelia with powdery soredia. It is sensitive to sulphur dioxide pollution and in the past, when air quality was poor, it was much scarcer than Hypogymnia physodes. As air quality has improved in recent decdes, it has increased significantly. It grows on acidic bark (particularly twigs) and is often found on larch trees in the uplands of West Glamorgan where it has a scattered distribution. It also occurs on acidic rocks.

Listed by Alan Orange in Flora of Glamorgan (Wade et al, 1994).
