Arrhenatherum elatius False Oat-Grass

A tall, course, hairless grass of mesotrophic grasslands. It is one of the most common species in grassy roadside verges and a key member of the MG1 community that occurs there. It produces distinctly bulbous rootstocks which can be seen at the bases of the stems just at or below soil level. It is widespread and common in much of West Glamorgan but is most common in the lowlands and rare in, or missing from, much of the coniferised uplands.
