Hieracium argillaceum Southern Hawkweed

A very common hawkweed in south Wales which belongs to Section Vulgata. It has 3-5 stem leaves which have prominent teeth with nipple like points (mammiform). The involucral bracts (phyllaries) are up to 13mm long and have prominent glandular and stellate hairs, but relatively few non-glandular hairs. It is similar to Sociable Hawkweed (Hieracium consociatum), which has shorter ivolucral bracts (usually less than 10mm)) but the leaves are somewhat narrower and don't have such long teeth on their margins. It is found in lots of different habitats, often where there is disturbance. It is one of the most common hawkweeds in West Glamorgan and it is a frequent  member of the forest roadside verge community.
