Impatiens parviflora Small Balsam

An annual plant that is native to central Asia which was introduced to Britain in 1830 and first recorded wild in Cheshire in 1848. It occurs mostly in damp, shaded habitats such as the edges of woodland and the banks of water courses, as well as in roadside verges and on waste ground in urban areas. It has spread throughout England and from there into Scotland and, more recently, into Ireland. It is mostly concentrated in the south of England and it is relatively uncommon in Wales. There are few records of it in West Glamorgan, mostly in the Swansea area, and where it has been recorded in the past (e.g. on the banks of the Tennant Canal near Neath town centre) it has not persisted.
