Ranunculus penicillatus Stream Water-crowfoot

The Ranunculus penicillatus aggregate is split into 2 subspecies in the British Flora, Ranunculus penicillatus ssp. penicillatus and Ranunculus penicillatus ssp. pseudofluitans. These are not mapped separately in the BSBI Atlas, but are described in Stace's New Flora of the British Isles (4th Edition, 2019). Both have been recorded in West Glamorgan and are described separately here. Some authors treat these taxa as two distinct species. Confusion with River Water-crowfoot (Ranunculus fluitans) is possible but the receptacle and fruit capsule of Ranunculus penicillatus is densely hairy while those of Ranunculus fluitans are glabrous. Furthermore, Ranunculus fluitans is quite rare in Wales and has not been recorded in West Glmaorgan nor, with any certainty in the light of modern interpretation, anywhere else in Glamorgan.
